Concerned about the future of Video Games? I am, too. Your senators are looking to push bills limiting the content in video games. Now, if you already haven't, E-MAIL YOUR SENATOR and calmly explain to him or her your side of the story.
For those of you in the USA, the Video Game Voters Network makes this tremendously easy. If you sign up, they will have a pre-written letter and upon hitting "send" will send it to your state's senators.
Even Video Game-creator/legend Will Wright is urging gamers to join. As some of you know, Will Wright's ever-popular game "The Sims" came under attack last year under none other than Jack Thompson, saying that it had the possibilities to cater to pedophiles and other such perverts.
Mr. Wright says,
"Dear Fellow Gamer:
I don't have to tell you that some politicians in Washington and the states have been attacking video games, calling on government to enact laws to regulate this modern day form of entertainment. As gamers, we know that video games have the same wide range of content that can be found in other entertainment choices such as movies, books, and music. As far as I am concerned, there is no reason to target video games for harsher treatment than any other media. I hope you agree, and will join me to do something about it.
Video games are a new and quickly evolving medium, but our critics do not understand the medium because most do not even play these games. Our choice of entertainment is a fully protected form of artistic expression and free speech under the Constitution, and one court after another has ruled that video games have the same First Amendment protection as books, movies, music, and cable television programs. If video game sales to minors are regulated based upon their content, as some politicians propose, the end result could be diluted and duller storylines as many game publishers will not be able to take the same risks that lead to great, innovative movies, books, and music. This is not right!
What can you do to fight this threat? Become a part of the first line of defense in protecting the games that we love to play by joining the Video Game Voters Network. The Network has been created to provide gamers a place to learn more about the threats to video games and to take action. We can't afford to just sit back while our games become subject to government regulation! Take a stand today. Take action at [link]
Sincerely,
Will Wright"
I have taken the time to send the pre-written letter offered on the website to my three senators. Lucky for me, one has written back. His e-mail reads:
"Dear *******:
Thank you for contacting me about indecent material in video games. I appreciate hearing from you.
As you are well aware, the video game industry’s popularity continues to expand. However, many of these games contain extremely mature subject matter and should be directed towards age-appropriate players. In order to assure that children are playing age-appropriate games, it is important that parents play a leading role in monitoring what games their children are playing at home.
Currently, video games come with a rating system similar to the assigned system of movie ratings, which allows parents to know exactly what kind of content is in the games they buy for their children. I believe that parents should utilize this rating system and be truly aware of the content in the games they allow their children to play.
That being said, the responsibility of parents combined with the information required on all video games does not mean our current regulations cannot be improved to further protect our children from harmful material. Toward that end, I will be sure to keep your concerns in mind when considering legislation on this matter.
Thank you again for contacting me.
Sincerely,
Ken Salazar
United States Senator"
Some senators will be nice enough to write you back. By using these peaceful means, we can easily effect a change in our own gaming community.
